Destination wedding brides! Your wedding day is fast approaching and there are so many plans and things to think about, especially if you are traveling somewhere else for the wedding. One thing you don’t want to worry about is how to keep your wedding dress safe during travel! With Hawaii being one of the major wedding destinations in the world, and so many of my brides being from all over the globe, I thought it would be helpful to write a few tips about how to travel with your precious gown.
- Call your airlines- First things first, once you know your travel plans, it would be helpful to call your airlines to see what rules they have about garment bag sizes, extra luggage, etc. You will want to carry on your dress with you on the plane, and some airlines have strict rules about the size of baggage you can take with you on an airplane. It is best to be prepared so that you don’t end up having to check your dress and have it lost somewhere!
- Shipping your dress- if you decide to ship your dress instead, make sure to ship it early enough! You don’t want to have your dress delivered to you on the day of your wedding in case you need any last minute adjustments. Fed Ex or UPS can help you with determining what the best way to ship your dress safely.
- Make a list- as you can probably tell, I love lists! Make a list with important dress information- the designer, instructions on how to keep it clean, how to properly put it on, etc. It would also be helpful to make a list of what you need to go along with the dress- the right undergarments, shoes, jewelry, and veil or headpiece.
- Find a good quality garment bag- one that will withstand the stress of traveling and keep it from getting scrunched or wrinkled badly. You’ve dreamed about the perfect dress- so don’t manhandle it by putting it in a suitcase! Try to find one that is sturdy and big enough to carry your gown.
- Upon arrival- once you have reached your destination, take the dress out and allow it to hang and air out. This will help the dress settle and get any wrinkles and creases out.
- Consult with the place that you bought your dress from. They may have great advice on how to care and handle your specific gown. Find out if the material needs any special handling. Some fabrics like chiffon are more delicate than others.
