How to Get a Great Engagement Photoshoot

You found the right man and now you got the proposal!  What’s next?   Now is the time to start thinking about engagement photos!  Engagement photos are great to celebrate your upcoming wedding, maybe use them for announcements, and even to get to know your photographer.  Here are some of my tips to ensure a great photoshoot for your engagement session.

  1. Research and think about the style you like.  Do you like the classic, timeless look?  Or do you prefer a more modern, artistic look?  What types of photographs draw your eye?  Do you like bright, bold colors, or soft and subtle tones?  Do you like having an epic background or do you prefer more intimate portraits?  These are some questions to ask yourself beforehand.
  2. Find the right photographer.  Find somebody who you feel comfortable with, and who can communicate with you with any questions or thoughts you have.  Let them know any concerns  you have before the shoot so they know exactly what to expect when it comes time to take pictures.
  3. Choose a great location.  Luckily, Hawaii is filled with dream locations to suit any style.  From the mountains to the oceans, or the bustling scene of downtown, there is no short of beautiful locations to choose from.  Find a location that will work for both you and your photographer, and the perfect time to get there, depending on the light and how busy it is.
  4. Shop for the perfect outfit!  This is where the fun begins.  Find something to suit both you and your significant other’s style.  Comfort is the most important aspect.  Try not to get too matchy matchy or overly trendy.
  5. Practice posing, “unposing”,  kissing, and almost kissing.  This might sound like funny advice, but sometimes it helps to practice a few key poses in advance.  A lot of times, couples can be very uncomfortable in front of the camera, so  practicing beforehand can give you the confidence to shine!  I suggest getting in really close with your fiance- touching foreheads, caressing their arms, looking into their eyes, closing your eyes while he leans in to kiss you.  These make for some romantic shots.   Walking hand in hand in unison, twirling and dipping are also fun to practice!
  6. Trust the process.  During the photoshoot, I might tell you to kiss multiple times or frolic with eachother.  Have fun and go with it!  Afterwards, it will take a few weeks to edit the photos.  Please be patient and trust that your photos will turn out amazing!
  7. Share the love!  After getting your photos back, it is a really great feeling when you share your photos and give a shout out.  Just remember not to re-edit or apply filters.  Also, referring the photographer to other potential couples is such a great way to give your photographer some love.

Hope you find these tips helpful when preparing for your engagement photoshoot!
