FAQ: Light Gear I use
posted in:

I've had this question a few times now, what lighting equipment do I use?  Some ask about my  big set up, do I use couple alien bees, softbox, etc... but honestly I actually just use one light when I'm out doing my sunset shot.  Most times one, sometimes 2 speedlites.  In the beginning, when I didn't know lights, I got the alien bees set up, but I don't ever use it.  It's not very mobile, big to carry around and I'd need a battery pack.... HEAVY!  I tried it once, I was exhausted...really.  I was also worried about the wind knocking it over.

-Canon Speedlite 580exii

-Light filter, I use the photoflex blow up softbox

-Scott Robert Lim's trigger system, one on hotshoe of your camera, one on flash

-One light stand

I usually have my lightstand 3-5 feet away from the subject.  I don't use an umbrella or huge softbox because it's windy here, which can cause some damage to your lighting gear.  It could work if you bring sand bags, though I can just see the umbrella blowing inside out.

Its my easiest setup.  Ofcourse I can add more if I wanted to, but on location I like to bring just 1.  If you don't have a lightstand, bring an assistant.  Or you can shoot & hold it yourself....up and to the side....it might work ;)

It was such a dark and cloudy, voggy day on Saturday.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it works even better when the sun goes down.

foto friday: teach me teach you
posted in:

i've had photogs ask me if i do workshops or teach.  i laugh and say 'me? no, i still have lots to learn...and i dont teach, dont know how to teach and you probably won't understand me because all you'll here is the words 'umm, like, you know'  but when my cousin Nan from Michigan asks me camera and photography questions, i'm writing a bunch of stuff to her, tips, how to, etc.  But ofcourse she understands my 'umm like you know' talk  ... so I'd like to take some credit for her sunset and sunrise photography  ;)  Jealous that Michigan skies are much more beautiful!

I use a wide angle lens, it gets a lot of the sky.  Use your 18-55 kit lens even, some may not care for it, but it works great.   I love the color in the sky when it gets dark.  I start with ISO 100 and Shutter at 1/200th (which controls the ambient light) and play with your aperture setting, higher aperture if you want darker, lower for brighter.  As the sky gets darker, then you can set your shutter down to 1/125th or something.  Well that's what I do, I know others do it differently.  Try it tonight.

The Hawaii sky has been so cool.  I was actually driving home from a shoot and stopped at a stoplight, looked over and the sky was amazing!  I stopped on the side of the road, grabbed my camera and rushed to take the photo.  The colors can come and go really fast, so I couldnt drive to the perfect spot to get the perfect shot, it be gone by then,  I just wanted the red sky!

ISO100 Shutter 1/250th f2.8

Shot below is at Shark's Cove.  It was so gray and rainy earlier so I didn't think I'd get anything.  The sun started to peak through and I got the couple together quickly before the sun disappeared.

Above shots was a base to get you here...
